Considerations of Japanese E-mail Software

I originally divided this section up by editors. In the early days of the Internet, almost all e-mail was text and reading and writing e-mail and news was like reading and writing to a file. Thus, the most important consideration was the editor. People's use of the Internet has become more sophisticated and now the choice of mail or news software depends on a wide variety of supported functions. Some of the functions to consider are listed below.

• mime support,
• protocol support such as IMAP or POP,
• integration with a Japanese dictionary,
• integration with spell checker,
• integration with or emulation of favorite editor,
• folder management support, mail filter support, integration with a mail delivery agent (MDA) such as procmail.
