These features were a big topic on TLUG for a long time. I'm glad that Keisuke Takebe made a page like this. I've used the patch successfully with Netscape Navigator 3.0 and Communicator 4.0.
Armen had a few problems using XFree86 3.1 and Metro X.

Japanese in Netscape Bookmarks
Even if you don't write Japanese and don't feel you would paste Japanese text into a form, I still recommend installing Takebe's patch. It allows Japanese text to be pasted from a web page into the xjdic Japanese to English dictionary program. This allows a person to read a web page like the Yomiuri Shimbun and be able to rapidly get the reading of a Kanji without knowing the radical or even have to take your hand off the mouse in order to use a paper dictionary such as Nelson's red classic.

Untar and ungzip the file in a temporary directory.
# mkdir netscape_tmp # tar zxvf netscape_nihongo_patch.tar.gz -C netscape_tmp
Make a backup copy of your X11R6 application defaults file for netscape.
# cp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/Netscape Netscape.orig
Copy the application defaults file found in the package to the app-defaults directory.
# cp Netscape /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/
Make a symbolic link to Netscape-ja.ad.
# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/ # ln -s Netscape Netscape-ja.ad # pwd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults # ls -l Netscape* -r--r--r-- 1 root root 222636 Nov 12 23:22 Netscape lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Nov 12 23:24 Netscape-ja.ad -> Netscape
Compile the locale.c source.
-fPIC -shared -Wl,-rpath=/usr/X11R6/lib,-soname,liblocale.so \ -o liblocale.so locale.c -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lXt -lX11
Copy liblocale.so into <tt>/usr/local/netscape</tt>.
Create a shell script called netscape.sh.
# cat netscape.sh #!/bin/sh export LANG=ja_JP.eucJP export LD_PRELOAD="/usr/local/netscape/liblocale.so:/lib/libc.so.5.2.18" exec /usr/local/bin/netscape
If you don't have libc.so.5.2.18 you might want to copy it from the package into your lib directory.
Run the netscape.sh script instead of the netscape binary. In my case I edited my fvwm resource file so that the shell script was called from the menu as well as from good stuff.
