I've been studying kanji for years. One of the best tools
that I've found is mule with EDICT and edict.el. I load
the top stories for the Nikkei Shimbun into mule from the
web and rapidly get the readings for the kanji that I am
unsure of. I also find it useful to print the text out
on paper in a large font size so that I can write the
readings of the kanji above difficult kanji. To increase
the size of the font, I use the -V option of
psconv.
